It is an agreement with the Town of Mesagne oriented towards the set off of a project co-financed by the Town of Mesagne, the Local Health Unit BR1, the Local Education Superintendency of Brindisi. It has been thought and inspired by the principles of the project “Healthy Cities”. The GLEI (ISBEM Epidemiological Working Group) is carrying out epidemiological studies on alcohol consume, food habits and sexual awareness among the student population of the Town of Mesagne.

Subproject Alcoholism:

In our country the abuse of alcohol causes many healthcare and social problems, that can have a negative impact on the psycho-physical maturity and on the health in the age of development.

 

Subproject Sexual Education:

Sexual Education not only as a simple transmission of information, but also as a development of the communication and relational capacities of the person.

 

Subproject Obesity:

Obesity is a consequence of a positive energetic balance, to which both Genome and Environment contribute.

SUBPROJECT 1

 PREVENTION OF THE DIFFUSION OF ALCOHOL ABUSE

 

TERRITORY:             Town of Mesagne

TARGET:                     Students attending third grade of Junior High School, students attending High Schools and young people attending Driving Schools

OBIETTIVI PRIORITARI:

1.  Promotion of behaviours and life styles that favour health

METHODOLOGY:   Survey, hand out of questionnaires


STAGE 1                Carrying out a survey, by means of a questionnaire (A1/ALC) on the consume of alcohol, on the levels of awareness, on the students’ perception, during the school year 1999-2000

STAGE 2                Educational-preventive intervention (alcohol education), by creating a training course on alcohol-related problems and pathologies for students and teachers, to carry out during the school year 2000-2001

STAGE 3                Hand out of an assessment questionnaire with the aim to identify alterations concerning concepts and opinions on alcoholic drinks, as a consequence of an intervention on health education, to be carried out during the school year 2001-2002;

RESOURCES:        Doctor expert in alcohol epidemiology, specialist in hygiene and preventive medicine, statistics consultant, biologist with scientific experience, project coordinator, secretary;

TIME:                 3 years, articulated in three fundamental stages;

YOUNG PEOPLE AND SEXUALITY

Training interventions – sexual education in the primary and secondary schools of Mesagne.

SUBPROJECT 3

 ASSESSMENT OF FACTORS DETERMINING THE DEVELOPMENT OF OBESITY IN THE DEVELOPMENT AGE

 

TERRITORY:     Town of Mesagne

 

TARGET:             Subjects aged between 4 and 19 years; parents of alumni of all ages included in the survey.

 

PRIORITY OBJECTIVES:

  • Detection, among the school population, of the prevalence of obesity and overweight;
  • Detection of the obesity-related alterations of the glico- and lipo- metabolism and of the pressure in the school population and in their families;
  • Assessment of the importance of genetic factors in the development of obesity in this geographical area;
  • Assessment of the importance of psycho-social factors in the genesis of obesity in the developing age (realism of the body image, moment in which the influence of the family concerning such topic gives in to that exercised by the same age group, the source and the power of food information, the relationship between humour and food, between “self-efficacy” weight, between weight and deviating behaviours, such as the excessive dieting)

METHODOLOGY:

  • Survey in which anthropometrical, clinical and psychological data will be collected through the hand out of questionnaires during the school year 2000-2001

  • Educational-preventive intervention, years 2001-2002-2003
